# Remove margin

Once your position is open, you can remove some margin from it.

The less margin you have, the higher the risk considering your position size remains the same. In other words, removing margin from a position increases your liquidation price, meaning you are more leveraged.

You cannot remove all the margin from your position without fully closing it. We calculate the maximum amount of margin you can remove.  Sometimes, you can't remove some margin at all as Hyperliquid requires to keep a [maintenance margin](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/margining#maintenance-margin-and-liquidations).
